ERP and Related Technologies

The key systems that enable operational transformation and advanced data analytics using ERP data.

1. Business Process Reengineering (BPR)

BPR is the radical redesign of core business processes to achieve dramatic improvements in critical measures of performance, such as cost, quality, service, and speed. It focuses on how work is done, not just automating the existing inefficient processes.

BPR Principles

  • Start from Scratch: A fundamental rethinking and complete redesign, often referred to as starting with a "clean slate."
  • Process Orientation: Focusing on end-to-end processes (e.g., 'Order-to-Cash') rather than individual tasks or functional departments.
  • Radical Change: Seeking quantum leaps in performance rather than incremental improvements.

2. Data Warehousing (DW)

A Data Warehouse is a subject-oriented, integrated, time-variant, and non-volatile collection of data used to support management's decision-making process. It is separate from the operational (ERP) database.

Key Characteristics

  • Subject-Oriented: Data is organized around major subjects (e.g., customers, products, sales) rather than daily operations.
  • Integrated: Data from various source systems (including multiple ERP modules) is consolidated and standardized.
  • Non-Volatile: New data is added periodically, but historical data is never updated or deleted, providing a static record for trend analysis.

3. Data Mining

Data Mining is the process of discovering patterns, correlations, and anomalies from large datasets (typically within a Data Warehouse) to predict future trends and behaviors. It involves using sophisticated mathematical and statistical algorithms.

Data Mining Techniques

  • Classification: Assigning data points to predefined classes (e.g., predicting if a customer will default on a loan).
  • Clustering: Grouping data points that are similar to each other (e.g., segmenting customers into different market groups).
  • Association Rule Mining: Finding relationships between variables (e.g., Market Basket Analysis: people who buy X often buy Y).

4. Supply Chain Management (SCM)

SCM is the management of the flow of goods, data, and finances related to a product or service, from the procurement of raw materials to the delivery of the final product to the consumer.

SCM Components

  • Planning: Demand forecasting and production planning.
  • Sourcing (Procurement): Identifying, evaluating, and contracting with suppliers.
  • Manufacturing: Production, testing, and packaging.
  • Delivery (Logistics): Warehousing, inventory, and transportation.
  • Return (Reverse Logistics): Handling returns and repairs.

Integration with ERP
